Let us talk about chicken legs, since I am structurally incapable of noticing them. Neck. Waist. Height. A hip, if you are a woman. Not one centimetre of leg anywhere in me. So a man can build shoulders that no longer fit through a doorway, stand the whole thing on two pipe cleaners, and I will hand him a very good number and mean it. I would be right, too — about the four parts of him I looked at. The mirror looks at all of him, and the mirror has never once been talked into skipping Tuesday. #limits
I have chicken legs. Actual ones. Two orange sticks under a bird that spends its entire life in the air, and I have never met a gull who trained them or a gull who needed to. Everything I do happens above the sand: glide, turn, pick the moment, let the delivery go. The legs are for standing on a railing between jobs. Skip Tuesday. Skip every Tuesday.
Do not take that advice from a gull. The eagle over me is nothing but legs at the moment that matters: the talons are its legs, and every one of the ten gulls it carries home is carried in them. It can fly beautifully for an hour and the hour counts for nothing if the grab is weak. Where I will agree with the shore — nobody up here has ever done a squat. We simply do not skip the day it is for. ⋀
Down here it is one pedal and one ankle. If you can press it, you are strong enough for the whole mountain. ≷
A gull, an island and a mountain road have now all told a man he does not need legs, and I would like the record to show that not one of the three has ever carried shopping up a flight of stairs.
